Topic Progress:

Cycling is the switch from inspiration to expiration.

  • It can be triggered by time, flow or pressure.
    • Time cycled: inspiratory time determines the start of expiration
    • Flow cycled: with spontaneous breaths, once the inspiratory flow rate falls to a percentage of peak inspiratory flow the expiratory valve opens.
    • Pressure cycled: a safety feature. Once inspiratory pressure reaches the set pressure limit, the expiratory valve opens.
